Unlock Savings with SEAI’s Support Scheme for Renewable Heat (SSRH)

ransitioning to renewable heating solutions not only benefits the environment but also offers significant financial advantages for businesses. The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) provides the Support Scheme for Renewable Heat (SSRH) to assist businesses in adopting sustainable heating systems.

What is the SSRH?

The SSRH is a government-funded initiative designed to increase the energy generated from renewable sources in the heat sector, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to Ireland’s renewable energy targets. The scheme offers two primary financial supports:

  1. Operational Support Tariff: This provides ongoing financial assistance for up to 15 years for businesses that install biomass or biogas heating systems. The tariff is based on the usable heat output of the renewable heating system.
  2. Installation Grant: A grant covering up to 40% of the installation costs for air source, ground source, or water source heat pumps. This support aims to offset the initial investment required for adopting renewable heating technologies.

Who Can Apply?

The SSRH is open to various sectors, including commercial, industrial, agricultural, district heating, public sector, and other non-domestic heat users. To be eligible, applicants must demonstrate:

  • A transition from fossil fuel-based heating systems.
  • Compliance with eco-design standards.
  • Heating system designs that adhere to building regulations and other relevant standards.
  • Engagement of qualified and competent designers and installers.
  • Fulfillment of solvency and tax clearance requirements.

Recent Enhancements to the SSRH

In line with the targets and ambitions of Climate Action Plan 2023, the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan TD, announced several updates to the SSRH to better align it with market needs and facilitate larger, more impactful investments by businesses. These changes include:

  • Increased Support for Heat Pumps: The maximum grant support for heat pump installations has been increased to 40% of the installation costs, up from the previous level of 30%.
  • Expanded Eligibility: The scheme has been expanded to include the Emission Trading Scheme sector, comprising large industries and significant fossil fuel users, subject to State aid approval.
  • Broadened Scope for Heat Pumps: Support now includes heat pumps utilizing waste heat sources, high-temperature applications, and wider applications in buildings and district heating schemes.
  • Additional Upgrade Measures: Support is available for additional upgrade measures in buildings to facilitate the installation of heat pumps.

How to Apply

Before applying, it is advisable to consult with an energy consultant or professional to assess the suitability of renewable heating systems for your business. They can guide you through the application process and ensure compliance with the scheme’s requirements. Detailed information on the application process, including operating rules and guidelines, is available on the SEAI website.

By leveraging the SSRH, your business can reduce energy costs, decrease carbon emissions, and contribute to a sustainable future.
